Volunteer

Volunteers are crucial to The Helm and many programs couldn’t run without them. Volunteers of all ages and talents are welcome, every helping hand truly matters.

We have many volunteering opportunities!

Our volunteering options are below. To apply as a volunteer, fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

Office & Clerical Work

Are you looking for meaningful volunteer work in a friendly environment? The Helm volunteers assist the staff in a variety of roles – data entry, answering phones, assembling documents, and assisting with our medical equipment loan closet inventory among other things

Special Events & More

The Helm hosts many regular programs and special events throughout the year. Most programs and events present numerous opportunities for volunteers with different skills and interests to give back to their community. Just fill out your name, email address, and phone number below, and Heidi Uhlig-Johnstone will contact you.

Escort Drivers

Being an escort driver is a great way to meet new people and give back to the community. Our seniors often need rides to the doctor when other transportation becomes difficult or unavailable. There are no regular hours and you devote whatever time you have, even if it’s just an hour a week

Meals On Wheels

Volunteers from all walks of life come together to give back to our community by delivering Meals on Wheels to our homebound seniors. These caring volunteers deliver not just a meal, but a much-appreciated smile and friendly visit. It seems like such a simple task, but to our homebound seniors, it is so much more. For many, it’s the personal connection that affects them the most

Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Counselor

The Helm has partnered with the Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) with support from the Detroit Area Agency on Aging to help our seniors understand their health care options. MMAP provides in-depth training in Medicare and Medicaid rules and regulations. MMAP volunteers help our seniors understand their Medicare benefits, determine which medical and prescription drug plans are best for them, and make sure they are receiving all the benefits to which they are legally entitled.

Gardening and Grounds Maintenance

Whether you're passionate about gardening or just want to lend a hand, we could use your help maintaining the gardens and raised planter boxes at The Helm.

Friendly Reassurance Program

Friendly reassurance program matches a volunteer with an older adult for monthly calls. More than just making sure calls are answered, the volunteer and recipient take time to talk about overall well-being, and help alleviate feelings of loneliness or social isolation.

Home Chore Program

Home chore program provides older adults assistance with simple spring yard clean up and fall leaf removal as well as minor home maintenance issues like changing light bulbs, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors or tightening loose door handles or hand railings. This is a very simple way to significantly impact a senior's life. The time commitment is minimal and the schedule is flexible.
