WE CAN’T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT YOU.

Volunteers are crucial to The Helm. Many programs couldn’t run without them. Volunteers of all ages, and talents, are welcome. Every helping hand truly matters.

In the last year alone, volunteers of all ages provided over 15,000 hours of service!

So, if you want to touch and improve lives, we’d love to see you here.

Meals on Wheels

Volunteers from all walks of life come together to give back to our community by delivering Meals on Wheels to our home-bound seniors. These caring volunteers deliver not just a hot meal, but a much-appreciated smile and friendly visit. It seems like such a simple task, but to our home-bound seniors, it is so much more. For many, it’s the personal connection that affects them the most.

Escort Drivers

Being an escort driver is a great way to meet new people and give back to the community. Our seniors often need rides to the doctor when other transportation becomes difficult or unavailable. There are no regular hours and you devote whatever time you have, even if it’s just an hour a week.

Office and Clerical Work

Are you looking for meaningful volunteer work in a friendly environment? The Helm volunteers assist the staff in a variety of roles – data entry, answering phones, assembling documents, and assisting with our medical equipment loan closet inventory among other things.

Special Events & More

The Helm hosts many regular programs and special events throughout the year. Most programs and events present numerous opportunities for volunteers with different skills and interests to give back to their community. Just fill out your name, email address, and phone number below and Heidi Uhlig-Johnstone will contact you.

Medicare / Medicaid Assistance Counselor

The Helm has partnered with the Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) with support from the Detroit Area Agency on Aging to help our seniors understand their health care options. MMAP provides in-depth training in Medicare and Medicaid rules and regulations. MMAP volunteers help our seniors understand their Medicare benefits, decide which medical and prescription drug plans are best for them, and make sure they are receiving all the benefits to which they are legally entitled.

Interested? All you need are good computer skills, an interest in learning more about our health care system, and a desire to help others understand their health benefits.

If this describes you, please contact one of our MMAP counselors, at (313) 882-9600, ext. 2110 for more information.
